John Allan’s talk will show that Girtin’s painting is an important source for those studying Exeter Cathedral, recording aspects of the Georgian interior which were altered in the period 1805–30 or swept away entirely in the more radical changes of the Victorian restoration. He will compare the painting with other depictions of the same period and show that it fits into a rapidly developing skill in recording cathedrals at the end of the 18th century.
